More info:
I am a freelance naturalist/author/guide who has been living in Catalonia (northeast Spain) for 20 years. As I naturalist I work on surveys of local dragonflies, birds, butterflies and flora for organisations such as Oxygastra, a local dragonfly study group, ICO (Institut Catalā d'Ornitologia) and the Catalan Butterfly Monitoring Scheme, while as a guide I work for various British companies such as The Field Studies Council Overseas and The Travelling Naturalist and freelance for La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park. I have recently created a self-guided walking circuit in La Garrotxa for Andante on Foot, and am currently busy investigating and mapping out a 700 km walking network in La Garrotxa for the local tourist board. I have just published a book of walks (Sunflower books) around the Costa Brava and have co-authored the forthcoming Traveller's Nature Guide to Spain, published by Oxford University Press in March 2004. My next book is to be a series of wildlife walks in Girona province, followed possibly by a series of restaurant walks in the same area. My web-site will tell you more.

    Jean,

You're probably a bit late for the best orchids in the region. Last year I was looking at a few superb stands of Provence orchid in the first week of April. Likewise, in nearby more calcareous regions (Montgrí, for example) the best time for orchids is from late Feb. through to Late April. One species you may still find in flower is the lax-flowered orchid, which is a later flowerer.
