The German non-profit association M.E.E.R. wants to guarantee that the encounters of humans and cetaceans happen with respect and consideration. This is realised through the combination of ecological whale watching tourism, research and public work. Through research, co-operation with organisations, scientists, whale watching operators and media, and the mediation of ecological knowledge to locals and tourists, M.E.E.R. La Gomera aims to reach the following goals: · Promotion of ecological whale watching as a sustainable use of cetaceans in the sense of responsible eco-tourism · Implementation of a marine protected area off La Gomera · Establishment of a whale watching interpretation centre on La Gomera. In 2001 M.E.E.R. La Gomera was honoured with the international environmental award "Tourismus und Umwelt", which is granted since 1987 by the German Association of Travel Agencies and Travel Operators (DRV). The project "realises new ways of co-operation of research and tourism in an exemplary and innovative way" so pointed out in the bestowal. M.E.E.R. organises public events (slide-shows, lectures, etc.), has produced an English-language educational film about the project on La Gomera, co-operates on an international level with organisations, keeps touch with government authorities and presents its scientific findings on international fora. Moreover, we offer practical courses in behavioural biology for students and all people interested in the research and con-servation of cetaceans. For further information about these courses please see our website. If you want to receive a detailed brochure on our practical courses, please send a message to: praktika@meer.de
